Course description

This course focuses on imparting skills to provide initial intervention in a serious condition before professional medical help being available, such as performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while waiting for an ambulance, as well as the complete treatment of minor conditions.

Target group

This course is open to the general public with or without any medical background

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, participants will be able: -

  1. To demonstrate basic first aid skills needed to control bleeding and immobilize injuries.
  2. To demonstrate the skill needed to assess the ill or injured person.
  3. To demonstrate skills to assess and manage foreign body airway obstruction in infants, children, and adults.
  4. To demonstrate skills to provide one- and two-person cardiopulmonary resuscitation to infants, children, and adults.
  5. To recall rationale and technique for automated external defibrillation.
  6. To demonstrate proper use of pocket mask during resuscitation attempts

Course content

Cognitive objectives

First Aid:

  • Know the basics of first aid, including Rescuer duties, Victim and rescuer safety, phoning for help, Finding the problem After the emergency
  • List the first aid steps for medical emergencies, including Breathing problems, Choking, Allergic reactions, Heart attack, Fainting, Diabetes and low blood sugar, Stroke, Seizures, Shock
  • List the first aid steps for injury emergencies, including Bleeding you can see, Wounds, Head, neck, and spine injuries, broken bones and sprains, burns and electrical injuries 
  • List the first aid steps for environmental emergencies, including Bites and stings, Temperature-related emergencies

CPR/AED:

  • Initiate the Chain of Survival.
  • Perform prompt, high-quality CPR with a C-A-B sequence.
  • Initiate early use of an AED (adult/child/infant)
  • Provide appropriate breaths
  • Practice the minor basic life support differences for children and infants.
  • Practice team CPR (adult/infant)

CPR/AED:

  • Explain how to give CPR to an adult, child, and infant.
  • Explain how to use an AED and how to use a mask.
  • Explain how to use a bag-mask and do rescue breathing for adult, child, and infant.
  • Explain how to help a choking adult, child, and infant.
  • List signs of choking.

Psychomotor Objectives:

First Aid:

  • Demonstrate the correct way to remove protective gloves.
  • Demonstrate how to use an epinephrine pen for a severe allergic reaction.
  • Demonstrate how to stop bleeding.
  • Demonstrate how to apply a bandage over a dressing & how to splint

Training methods

This course will be available on face-to-face and Online. It will encompass specific facilitator inputs (e.g. lecture presentations), combined with a variety of interactive learning activities, including structured group work, demonstrations, group and individual reflection, role plays, self-study and writing, and plenary discussions

Mode of assessment

The course will be assessed using pre and post-tests, continuous progressive tests, presentations, and group discussions

Award

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be issued with a certificate from Uganda Christian University.

Training venue

The training will be conducted at UCU School of Medicine campus Mengo or any other venue communicated in advance.

A training fee of UGX 250,000 will be charged for the course. This covers tuition fees, learning materials, and training venue. Payment should be sent to our bank account before the start of training and proof of payment sent to ucusom@admin.ucu.ac.ug NOTE: Foreign currencies will be converted using prevailing forex rates.
