Faculty of Journalism, Media and Communication

Arts area of studyThe Faculty of Journalism, Media and Communication (FJMC) started as the Mass Communication Department in 2000 and attained the status of a Faculty in 2018. It consists of two Departments, namely; Department of Journalism and Media Studies, and Department of Communication. The Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication is the Faculty’s maiden programme, however, the academic programmes have expanded to include an MA in Journalism and Media Studies, which started in 2014 and the MA in Strategic Communication, which started in 2019. A Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Communication is under development. A number of short courses are scheduled to start in 2020.

The number of students has increased from 23 in 2000 to over 400 in 2020 and the Faculty is adequately staff with nine full time staff of which five are PhD holders.

The faculty is headed by the Dean, Prof. Monica B. Chibita along with Heads of Department. Dr. Angella Napakol (Communication) and Dr. Emily Comfort Maractho (Journalism)

Department of Journalism and Media Studies

Courses offered 

Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication (BAMC)

The Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication grounds students in journalism and communication and prepares them for a lucrative career in journalism, media and communication. The Faculty’s practical approach to learning ensures that students develop multimedia skills for both journalism and communication practice.

The core courses of the programme are:

  • BAMC is a three-year course, with a semester of internship
  • The academic year starts in the Advent (Septem­ber) semester

 

Master of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies (MAJMS)

The Master of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies is designed to equip grad­uates to join the pool of sound academic staff and media researchers in the region; and to serve as astute journalists with the skills to link theory with practice in their journalistic and media work. The MAJMS offers a dual track, with a choice between an academic and a professional focus.

The programme courses are: Media Theory, Ethics, Gender and the Media; Communication, Development and Culture; Multimedia Production and Media Manage­ment.

The MAJMS is two-year modular programme, with contact study in the months of February and August The first module is in August and the second in February the following year. The academic track is suited for persons interested in research and/or an academic career while the professional track is suited for persons interested in sharpening their professional skills in jour­nalism and media. Students study both core and elective courses for each selected track

Short Courses

These are graduate certificates courses designed for individuals who want to advance their professional credentials in journalism, media and communication. They are intense, highly practical courses with the rigor of the profession. The courses include: multimedia production, knowledge management, persuasion and advocacy, public speaking, data journalism, professional/technical writing.

The short courses run every March and October at our Kampala Campus.
